Gaula has a steady and plentiful fishing over the whole stretch of the river throughout the whole season (1 June to 31 August). Early season fishing is mostly below the Gaulfoss rapids, a 300m long gorge that the salmon cannot run in too high water.

Later in the season, around midsummer time, the salmon have started settling throughout the river, providing good sport everywhere.  The Gaula River is well known for its big salmon in addition to large quantities of medium size salmon and grilse – averaging around 8,000 salmon during the three months season (June to the end of August). The average weight is around 4.5 kilos per fish. Throughout the whole season there is always the chance to catch the big one.  The river offers  plentiful runs and with fly-fishing stretches which provide some of the best sport in Norway.

The Gaula River fishing length is a total of 85km (53 miles) from the mouth at Oysanden to Eggafoss (waterfall). In addition there are three fishable tributaries; Sokna, Bua and Forra. Gaula is regarded by many as the best salmon fishing river in Europe. It runs through an area full of contrasts; from high mountain plateaus through canyons and forests to the gentler, wider and rich agricultural land near the Trondheim fjord. It is also one of the rivers with the longest salmon runs in Norway,

Catches have been enhanced by the newly introduced delayed bag-netting season, allowing early arriving salmon a free run to the river, and the buy-out of nets throughout the Trondheim fjord area which has increased the number of salmon in the river.
